Hitting the Road: RSA and NAB 2009

Apparently I’m not satisfied with packing a single conference into a week because I’m about to head out to San Francisco for the RSA Conference 2009, and from there I go to Las Vegas for the 2009 National Association of Broadcasters conference. I’m especially looking forward to the RSA Conference because I’ll be speaking on a panel that’s discussing Mac security in the enterprise.

If you aren’t familiar with the RSA Conference, it’s an annual event for information and technology security. I’ll be speaking on the “Responding to the Ignored Threat – Macs in the Enterprise” panel with Jon Allen from Baylor University, Stan Gatewood from University Systems of Georgia, and John Dasher from PGP. That’s on Tuesday, April 21 at 1:30PM pacific time at the Moscone Center.

On Wednesday, I’ll be in Las Vegas for NAB, which is an insanely huge conference for the broadcasting world. There’s going to be tons of uber-cool stuff for me to check out, and yes, I’ll be reporting on what I find, so be sure to check out TMO for my event coverage.

Since I can’t seem to keep my big mouth shut, I’ll be tweeting about both events throughout the week, so you can follow along in real time. You know, I just love technology.

Worthy Podcast: From Design Into Print

My good friend Sandee Cohen is wrapping up work on her new book, From Design Into Print (Peachpit Press), which is wonderfully exciting. Equally exciting — and available right now — is her new companion podcast. By no small coincidence, it’s also called From Design Into Print, and is totally worth checking out.

Sandee tackles a single print or design concept in each concise podcast, and she does it with her own unmistakable flair. Whether you’re new to design, prepress or production, or an experienced pro, Sandee’s bound to have something cool to share with you.

You’ll also get a little instant gratification since the podcast is available now, and the book doesn’t come out until some time in May. Everyone deserves a little instant gratification, so head over to Sandee’s Web site or the iTunes Store and check out what she has going on.

Adobe Flex on the Cheap

Turns out Adobe hates to see The Man bringing you down — where “The Man” means the economy, and “you” means developers that are down on their luck — so the company is giving away Flex Builder 3 Professional for free to any developer willing to show they are unemployed. That’s $699 worth of software for free. Holy crap.

Sure, this is a really nice thing to do for software developers that need to expand their skill base so they have a better chance at landing a job, but it’s also a win for Adobe because there’ll be more Flex developers out in the wild, and potentially ultimately more companies that can develop Flex-based applications with all of those freshly trained coders.

The catch? You can’t use your free copy of Flex Builder for production or commercial purposes. Still, you’ll be able to hone your Flex skills without having to shell out any cash.

You can score your copy of Flex Builder 3 Professional at the Adobe Web site.

Periodic Table of Type

Type is an elemental part of pretty much any design project, so us font junkies rely on tools like sample books, font managers and our own good taste to pick the right typefaces for our layouts. Since we also tend to be creative types, I just love it when I come across a cool new way to do the same old thing — like viewing fonts as a periodic table of the elements.

The incredibly clever team at Squidspot put together the Periodic Table of Typefaces to show off, as they call it, the “popular, influential, and notorious” typefaces all laid out in a slick looking grid that looks like it belongs on the wall in your high school chemistry class.

Yeah, this find lets me blend together my love for typefaces with my interest in science. This is totally über-geek, and now I’m secretly hoping Tom Lehrer has his eye on the Periodic Table of Typefaces, too.
